Martha Christina Tiahahu


Martha Christina Tiahahu (born in Nusa Laut, Maluku, 4 January 1800 - died in the Banda Sea, Maluku, 2 January 1818 at the age of 17 years) is a girl from Abubu Village on Nusalaut Island. Born around 1800 and at the time taking up arms against the Dutch colonialists was 17 years old. His father was Kapitan Paulus Tiahahu, a captain from Abubu country who was also Thomas Matulessy's assistant in the Pattimura War in 1817 against the Dutch.

Martha Christina Tiahahu is noted as a unique freedom fighter, namely a teenage daughter who immediately entered the battlefield against the Dutch colonial army in the Pattimura War in 1817. Among the fighters and the community to the enemy, she was known as a brave girl and was consistent with her dreams. 

Since the beginning of the struggle, he always took part and never resigned. With his long hair flowing back and tied with a head of beaver cloth (red) he still accompanied his father in every battle both on the island of Nusalaut and on the island of Saparua. Day and night he was always present and participated in making fortifications. He not only took up arms, but also encouraged women in countries to help men in every battlefield so that the Dutch were overwhelmed by the women who were fighting.

In the fierce battle in the village of Ouw - Ullath Jasirah, southeast of Saparua Island, it was seen how great this heroine was fighting the enemy along with the people's warriors. But in the end, because of their imbalance in weaponry, enemy trickery and betrayal, the warrior figures could be caught and served their punishment. Some had to die by hanging and some were thrown into Java. Kapitan Paulus Tiahahu was sentenced to death by gunshot. Martha Christina Tiahahu struggled to release her father from the death penalty, but she was helpless and continued her work in the forest, but was eventually caught and exiled to Java Island.

On the Eversten Warship, Martha Christina Tiahahu met her end and with military honors her body was launched in the Banda Sea on January 2, 1818. To appreciate her services and sacrifices, Martha Christina Tiahahu was confirmed as a National Independence Hero by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.

Since childhood, Martha Christina Tiahahu was known to be very brave and strong-willed. He also always followed his father wherever he went even when his father had meetings to plan war.

In 1817, at the same time, Kapitan Pattimura also fought against the Dutch on the island of Saparua, Maluku of Nusalaut.

The youngest hero who died in the Banda Sea

Martha will be exiled to the island of Java and forced to work on a coffee plantation. He was placed in a dark, empty room. Due to the death of his father, it made him feel depressed and like he lost his mind.

When sick, he doesn't want to accept any medicine. He also didn't want to eat, making his body even weaker. The spirit of his life has just disappeared. There is only a sense of despair because of the death of his father.

At 17 years old, he should not have been a colonial prisoner. However, his parents became prisoners who were ready to be married. In 1818, Martha's body was getting weaker.

On January 2, 1818 in the morning, Martha Christina Tiahahu breathed her last. He died between the waters of the island of Hunt and the island of Manippa. His body was then thrown overboard with military honors. Now his body resides in the Banda Sea.

This brave woman figure should be used as an inspiration for Indonesian women. an inspirational life story. At a young age he had the courage to fight against the Dutch colonial.

He is also a devoted child with his father, even though since childhood he has been left behind by his mother. So that the closeness with his father is very strong.

In his time Martha was an influential woman. Not only carrying weapons against the colonials. But she also provoked other women to fight against the Dutch.
