NARRATIVE TEXT, TIMUN MAS
Once upon a time, there lived an old widow who wanted a daughter to live with her in the village. Knowing her wish, a giant came to her house. He gave her a cucumber seed. The giant said that there would be a baby in the cucumber. She promised to return when the child was sixteen years old.
The widow planted her seeds in the garden. The next morning, a cucumber grew. He cut the cucumber and found a baby girl. The widow was very happy and named her baby Timun Mas. Day by day, Timun Mas grew into a beautiful woman. The widow remembered what the giant had warned. So when Timun Mas was sixteen, he told him to go to the forest with a bag filled with salt. "Don't let the giant catch you," the widow shouted to Timun Mas who ran into the forest.
The giant came and asked for Timun Mas. The widow refused to tell her whereabouts so the giant went into the forest. The giant called Timun Mas angrily. Timun Mas heard his voice and ran from him. The giant chased him. Timun Mas threw the salt given by the widow. Salt turns the forest into muddy land. The mud drowned the giant and he was never seen again.
